It's not the shore but...

Spencer felt so bad about being in the hospital while all the other kids got to have a day at the shore, so I promised him that I'd take him to Swain's Lake when we got back from New Jersey. Now, this lake doesn't resemble the ocean in any way at all. It's just a small lake with a couple of tiny beach areas, but to a four year old with no memory of the atlantic ocean, it was a good enough concession.

Of course after our arrival back in Michigan, we had a cool spell that lasted a few days before it finally warmed up enough for a trip to the lake. By then, Kalen was actually back to teaching classes so he missed this outing as well. My mom came along though and was a great help in keeping track of the kids. I tend to be paranoid with little kids and water.

When we got out of the car upon our arrival the wind had started to blow and we decided it was too cool to swim just yet so we played on the playground for awhile until it got a bit warmer.

At last the kids decided they were ready to brave the chilly water. It was interesting actually. Some parts of the water were really cold while but we'd find warm pockets at different spots in the lake that felt really nice.

Kaya preferred playing in the mud.

I love this lake because the kids can actually venture quite far before the water gets deep at all.

Spencer heading for the shore to take a snack break.

Taylor and Kendall had fun digging on the banks of the lake and making little clay balls to throw at each other.

The best part of all for Kaya: A warm towel and a pretzel.
After we had played for awhile we headed back to Albion for an ice cream at the Sweet Tooth. Perfect ending to a really fun day.

It really looks like you guys had a fun time. I wish we had stuff like that around here. We have to travel a long way to do anything.

Susannah,
You need to visit when it isn't subzero weather!

We loved that lake when we went there. It is just perfect, with the playground right there, so that those who want to swim can; but those who don't have an alternate activity. It's a good size, too, and has the picnic gazebo. I almost liked it better than Lake Michigan!
