This is one of my very favorite photos of Spencer. He's posing with his best buddy Lydia, who sadly, is moving to Maryland this week.
Spencer was recently tagged by his cousin Bentley so I thought I would combine the tag entry with his birthday spotlight into one post in order to avoid repeating a lot of the same information.
Spencer Nolan Oswald was born July 30, 2005. He is named after his grandpa Nolan Potter. He is celebrating his 3rd birhtday and is so excited about it. Apparently at the age of 3 he graduates from toddlerhood and becomes a "real" boy. He has also told us that at the age of 3 he will start using the potty. We'll see if he sticks to that one... He is a joy and a delight to have in our family. He is just so sweet and cuddly and makes us laugh constantly. He has a great sense of humor and he especially loves slapstick--one of his favorite shows is AFV which he calls the "funny show". We love the way that Spencer talks and expresses things. For example, he'll say: "I'm found mine ball!" or "Mommy, I want a snack about a cracker." He can sometimes be a bit bossy and demanding and wants things right now or else. We've been seeing an interesting side of him lately with his little temper flaring every so often and usually without warning. But then almost as soon as a tantrum comes, it's gone and he's just the happiest little person again. Spencer has been one of our most challenging children because of the severe food allergies and asthma that he suffers. We have to make sure that he doesn't ever eat any eggs, milk, wheat, or nuts. Did you know that eggs, milk, wheat, or nuts is in just about everything? It has been very difficult to find foods that are okay for him to eat, but we finally feel like we have things under control now and we are just really hopeful that someday he'll outgrow at least a couple of these allergies. He's such a good sport about it though. He recognizes foods that he can and can't have so he's good at letting people know if he can have a food when they offer him somthing. If we're eating something that he isn't sure if he can have, he'll ask us and if we tell him that it isn't for him, he usually just says okay and asks for something that he can have. But he gets SO excited if we tell him about a new food that he can have and he'll say over and over as he's eating: "It's okay! I'm can eat this!" We just really love him and are so happy he's in our family. That was a fast 3 years!

Oh, how cute! It was so fun to read that. I love the "snack about a cracker" thing!
I can't WAIT to see he and Bentley play in a few days!
Happy birthday, Spencer!
That's funny that you thought he said firefighter when he said "hider hider". My son Mitch can speak extremely well, I've always been so proud of him for that, but there are certain words that he intentionally mispronounces. Firefighter is one of those words. He calls them "fighterfighter". And lately he's been adding the "d" sound to everything, like "Asland" instead of Aslan (as in, "For Narnia, and for Asland!") and something else that I suddenly can't remember.
How did you find out about Spencer's food allergies? Do you have to carry one of those Epi-pen things? That is one of my biggest fears, that my kids will have a food allergy. And yea, eggs, milk, wheat, and nuts? What can he eat? I'm glad you have figured it out.
Wow Spencer! I can't believe you are 3! I hope we can see you soon!
Kirsten,
Figuring out what he was allergic to was a long, slow process. We knew milk was an issue early on because of a reaction he had to milk-based formula and all the trouble I had breastfeeding. I ended up cutting out all dairy from my diet which helped a tiny bit but he still had trouble nursing. It didn't occur to me that he was allergic to other things as well until later. He had terrible eczema that kept getting infected and he was just so miserable. The worst part of it was that the doctors I consulted never would take me seriously. Finally, when he was nearly 7 months old, we found a pediatric allergist who is over an hour drive from here but who is so amazing that I'd drive further to see him. He really listened to our concerns and agreed with us that there were some big issues. So he ordered blood work which they tested for just about every allergen known to man, and when it came back, it indicated that Spencer was allergic to those 4 things. As overwhelming as it was to find out how many things he couldn't eat, it was such a relief to finally feel like we could move ahead and do something to help him feel better. As for what we feed him: fruits, veggies, meat, rice and corn products, and specialty foods from a health food store. We do a lot of label reading since there are so many hidden sources of allergens and even eating a product made on the same equipment as something he's allergic to can make himm sick. Basically, the fewer ingredients a food has, the better his chances for being able to eat it are.
I loved the "hider hider" because of what why he wants to be in. I am at the library here at Lackland AFB and laughed out loud when I read it. Oops!
Cute. I feel like I am getting to know your kids. It is fun keeping up with you.
Check out the Class blog. It has a little activity. Shane has posted.
Amy, I am MORTIFIED that you remembered all the details about my memory on Jenn's blog! Honestly, I was hoping that it was something that you had been able to block from your mind! Please know my shame is limitless! Seriously, I was just being a spoiled brat of the worst sort! I'm glad you can find it in your heart to think that memory was fun though... :)
Oh, and so Spencer was allergic to breastmilk too? I didn't know you could be allergic to breastmilk. Man! Thanks for the info.
:) what a great kid!!
(I have a Spencer too:) )
Some of the nephews in my family have severe allergies to almost everything - I consider them high maintenance kids and the mother's who care for them angels!!
